Italy Will Produce Plastics From Natural Products, Instead Of Oil
BASED IN ITALY’S PO RIVER DELTA, BIOCHEMICAL COMPANY NOVAMONT HAS OPENED A PLANT TO PRODUCE PLASTICS WITH NATURAL SOURCES.
The compound called bio-butanediol will be used primarily for the production of biodegradable fruit and vegetable bags and shopping bags. Butanediol, which is used across different sectors like chemistry and electronics, has, until now, only been produced from fossil fuel sources.
The new development is defined as switching from a petrol-based production process to a water- and sugar-based one, which is more environmentally friendly. During fermentation, sugar is transformed into bio-butanediol by cultures of micro-organisms. With the use of this technique, it is expected that the renewable content will increase from 36% to 61% and greenhouse gas emissions will decrease by 10-15%.
