Life Saving Plastics

IF YOU COME ACROSS A MINI HORSE RUNNING WITH A PROSTHETIC LEG ON THE ROAD, DON’T BE SURPRISED. SHE MAY BE ANGEL MARIE, WHO JUST SNEAKED OUT OF HER BARN TO ENJOY THE SPRING ON THE MEADOWS.

Animal orthotist Derrick Campana helps hundreds of animals with mobility challenges. Using the versatility and malleability of plastics, Campana custom-builds devices to solve different problems. For some animals he makes support devices, while he builds prosthetics for others.

Little Angel Marie is one of Campana’s patients. When she was just two days old, her mother accidentally stepped on one of her front legs and the leg had to be amputated. This made it very difficult for her to move around on her own and the condition led to severe complications. Lennie, Angel Marie’s owner and the founder of Double B Equine Rescue -a non-profit organization dedicated to the care and treatment of injured, neglected, wounded horses- reached out to Campana to get help for Angel Marie. Campana fitted her with a custom plastic prosthetic leg, along with a sturdy plastic brace to support her other front leg. Although it took some time for Angel Marie to get used to these devices, she can now walk, eat on her own and, just like other horses of her age, sneak out of the barn whenever she finds the opportunity!
