Plastıcs And Beaches
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS OF MODERN LIFE IS THAT IT “SIMPLIFIES” DAILY LIVING. EVER SINCE THE FIRST MAN-MADE PLASTICS ENTERED IN OUR LIVES IN 1862, THE PLASTICS NAME HAS BEEN MENTIONED TOGETHER WITH SUCH NOTIONS AS "DURABILITY", "AFFORDABILITY", "MALLEABILITY" AND "LIGHTNESS". ALL THESE AND OTHER FEATURES NOT LISTED HERE, ARE CLEAR PROOF THAT PLASTICS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DISCOVERIES THAT “SIMPLIFY” OUR LIVES.
Today, plastics is the most popular material for tourism, vacation and, of course, the beaches. Just imagine trying to check-in to your flight with a wooden suitcase reinforced with metal strips. The counter personnel would naturally tell you that “You have gone over the weight limit. You need to pay an extra fee. ” I’m not even mentioning which conveyor will take that suitcase to your plane, the stretch film that will not be available to wrap around it for added security, and the security check which will take hours as you enter the airport. And of course, once the meal arrives on board, you will have to remember whether the silver knife was held with the right hand or left?
Let’s rewind the film a little more. Say you have holiday plans. You’d reach for your computer/tablet/smartphone to do the booking, right? Wrong. Because there is no plastics. Which means there are no antistatic computer cards, lightweight exterior materials, fiber cables and much more.
And I haven’t even started with the boating world yet. How plastics have revolutionized boat designs, made boats lighter and faster and thus created all around energy savings; and how this miracle material is used almost everywhere from buoys and lifejackets to non-slip flooring and wind-proof clothes is already well known.
And as for the beaches… Imagine yourself taking a dip in the sea in your cotton swimwear. Just think how that woven material, which is already too heavy to swim in, will feel like as you step out of the sea. I can almost hear you say the following: “Oh, the sea is lovely today. I do not want to come out at all.” And let’s add a little bonus fantasy to it: Claiming that no one will do a better job than her, your mother has insisted on hand-sewing your bathing suit. Lace? My imagination can’t go that far.
Today the beach is nice and hot, and you are enjoying it. All you want is to open your beach umbrella, recline on your lounger, put on your sunglasses and listen to music on your headphones. Maybe in a while you’ll also take out a beverage from the cooler you brought with you. Stop, it’s not that easy. First of all, you’ll need help carrying your umbrellas and loungers. It’s hard to carry that much weight all by yourself. Furthermore, since the loungers are not folding properly, you had to leave so many things at home just to be able to fit them in. Your sunglasses will feel heavier and heavier as hours go by. And they do not even seem to adequately filter the sun’s rays, right? Also, forget about that cold drink too. The ice in the box (so unfortunate that you have to use ice, huh?) has already melted. But do not pull a long face just yet; what will your kids say? Poor kids don’t even know how to play in the sand. Somebody’s throwing a wooden disc to someone else on the beach. Get the kids away from those, you don’t want them to be hit on the head.
At least, you can put all this stress behind you and find solace in the isolated world under the water. Don’t say who’s going to put on that 376-kilogram suit now. Come on, put it on, dive in, relax.
Relax… Look how nice summer is without plastics!
