From Waste To T-shırt

Stockholm-based retail group GANT launched a project called “Beacons”. The project aims to clean up the oceans of garbage as well as re-using the plastic salvaged from the sea. A fleet of 165 boats are helping the company by collecting garbage from the Mediterranean.

About 10% of the materials used in the making of the t-shirts resulting from the initiative will be upcycled plastic. It took researchers a year to figure out a way to make the plastic fiber not feel like, well, plastic. The company partnered with the Madrid-based Seaqual, an organization that upcycles PETs (Polyethylene terephthalate) collected from the sea to make a 100% polyester filament.
