In 2015, Turkey ranked fifth in Europe and 15th in the world in terms of vehicle production. Turkey is Europe’s biggest commercial vehicle manufacturer.

 

In 2016, the number of vehicles produced rose 9% to 1,456,000.

 

 

77% of vehicles produced in Turkey in 2016 were exported.

 

With its share of 16.8%, the automotive industry is the biggest exporter in Turkey.

The number one kind of vehicle produced in Turkey is the automobile. Turkey ranks 7th in Europe and 17th in the world in terms of automobile production.

 

The share of light commercial vehicles in Turkey (38%) is higher than the world average (20%). Turkey ranks second in Europe and 8th worldwide in this area.

A total of 12 industrial companies operate in 18 factories in the automotive industry. Four of these companies produce only automobiles while six produce only commercial vehicles.

 

The automotive industry provides 5.5% of the total employment in Turkey.

 

All of the automotive manufacturers are among the top 500 industrial institutions as listed by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry. Ford Otosan, Oyak Renault and Tofaş are also in the top ten.

Of the 276 R&D centers in Turkey, 78 are in the automotive industry. Automotive industry is the clear leader in R&D focus and investment.

 

While the general R&D/GDP ratio in Turkey is 1%, this ratio goes up to 3% in the automotive industry.

 

The number of cars per 1000 people is 189 in Turkey. That number is 808 in USA and 569 in Europe.
