  • Readıng The European Unıon

WHILE MOST PEOPLE PREFER “SOFT” BOOKS THAT CAN BE READ AT THE BEACH ON VACATION, SOME REGARD THIS BREAK FROM WORK AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO READ AND THINK ABOUT MATTERS THAT THEY HAVE BEEN CURIOUS ABOUT. WE HAVE COMPILED A LIST OF BOOKS AND TEXTS IN CASE YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ AND THINK ABOUT THE EU WHILE ON VACATION.

Immanuel Kant – Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical Sketch

No doubt, Immanuel Kant is one of the most-discussed, still well-known and perhaps most influential philosophers in the history of the world. It is not surprising that Kant was thinking about how to achieve perpetual peace, as had witnessed a bloody part of Europe’s history, which would be marred with wars and suffering up until World War II. In his work, which he wrote in 1795, Kant was, in a sense, laying the philosophical foundations of the idea of the European Union. In this brief text, Kant, seeking the answer to the question of how to ensure lasting peace, reaches the conclusion that only a federation of free nations would make this possible. Is this not what the European Union is in a way?

Luuk Van Middelaar – The Passage to Europe. How a Continent Became a Union

This book by Luuk Van Middelaar in a sense tells the history of the European Union. What sets it apart from other books with the same subject matter is that the author, writing this history based on his own experience and memories as a bureaucrat, strikes an easy to read style without straying from objectivity. Van Middelaar, who, at the same time, is a historian and philosopher, draws from multiple disciplines as he tells the history of the European Union and combines his foresights with philosophy. A book to read on vacation without too much effort.

Yanis Varoufakis – Adults in the Room: My Battle with Europe’s Deep Establishment

Former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, who was one of the leading politicians in the Syriza movement Greece, tells in this book about his falling out with his party and his resignation from the ministry, or, in its own words, about his battle with the European establishment. Even though the book looks at the European Union from a very critical viewpoint, Varoufakis is a politician who does believe in the European Union project. He just wants to transform Europe with a leftist drive.
