The Secret Hero Of The Clothıng Industry: Polyester

Issue 5
  • The Secret Hero Of The Clothıng Industry: Polyester

Here is another story of recycling that should be an example for us. A clothing company named “Patagonia” starts to make polyester by recycling used plastic bottles in 1993. It is also how it assumed the title of being the first clothing manufacturer to switch from used plastic wastes to polyester and fleece clothing. This was the a positive first step towards a sustainable system that saves more and saves people’s health by using less resources.

Even today, used bottles, faulty plastic production waste and worn clothing are transformed into polyester fibers to produce new clothes. Moreover, recycled polyester is offered for many garments, including underwear, jackets, shorts and woolen fabrics.

The use of recycled polyester provides a great benefit. As a source of raw materials, it reduces our oil dependence. It also reduces the types of wastes that are discarded. Thus, it retards the waste storage facilities and reduces the toxic emissions caused by incineration plants. For polyester clothing that is no longer worn or that is worn-out, it is necessary to help promote the new recycling trend.

Let’s Learn A Bit More About Polyester

Polyester fabric is a fabric of choice in today’s fashion. It is not a natural fabric like cotton, wool, silk, it is factory production. Although it is not natural, it is used frequently because of some features. The polyester fabric was invented in 1940 in England. It gained its reputation in the 1970s, with the pretentious advertisement showing that it still looked stylish without being ironed for 68 days. It was a very famous fabric at that time and many discotheque garments were made of polyester.

Polyester is the name of the raw material of the yarn in which the fabric is made. It is a synthetic polymer. In fact, polyester is simply a kind of plastic. Fabrics made of polyester fiber (polyester fiber) can be used in sewing clothes or plating work, and it can also be used as mixed with natural yarns. If you look at the clothes you buy, you can see labels such as 70% cotton and 30% polyester. Since the polyester fabric is not wrinkled and is flexible, it is aimed to reduce the wrinkling rate of natural fabrics and to provide flexibility for them by mixing it with natural fabrics.

Why Polyester Is On The Rise?

Polyester fabric is bright, durable, flexible, slippery and light fabric.
It dries easily. It is preferred in outer garments due to its quick drying.
It does not require ironing, does not wrinkle. It retains the iron-shaped shape for a long time.
It feels soft and silky.
