However, higher production does not mean that there is more plastic supply, because food production, another priority during the pandemic, also increases dramatically. It's not just bottles. AptarGroup Inc., which makes special parts for cosmetics and personal care packaging increased the production of lotion pumps and disinfectant caps. However, demand is still above supply.

For example, RPP Products Inc. manufactures automotive fluids, but started disinfectant production a few weeks ago. Although the company can produce 150,000 gallons per week, for now it has announced that its only option is to pack disinfectants in automotive bottles.

QYK Brands LLC, a California-based cosmetics company that currently sells more hand sanitizers than any other product, says the problem is not just under-supplied plastic containers. General Manager Rakesh Tammabattula said that the chemical compounds needed to make gel are not sufficient.
