  • Buıld Your Own Plastıc House In Fıve Days

The project created by a Colombian architect, Oscar Andres Menzez Gerardino, transforms plastic and rubber waste into eco-friendly construction materials that builds houses, shelters, classrooms, community centers and other such buildings. The award-winning project that has provided shelter for many families and communities is called Conceptos Plasticos, “Plastic Concepts”.

Unfortunately, 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into oceans every year.  A group of Colombians led by Oscar Andres Gerardino have created a project to fight against this threatening accumulation of plastic waste. The Plastic Concepts projects aims to provide a long term social and economic solution for the global housing crisis that is becoming a bigger problem by the day. Having won The Venture award in 2016, the project recycles plastic and rubber waste into construction materials shaped like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

Eco-Plastic Blocks

The recycled plastic waste is melted and molded into plastic blocks using industrial die pressing methods. These high quality blocks last about 500 years on average, and are extreme weather resistant. Being made of plastic, they are also durable against moisture, earthquake, insects, rodents, microorganisms, and thanks to their flame-retardant additives, fire.

In the last two years, the Plastic Concepts team has melted down and molded 300 tons of plastic to build eco-houses.

Easy Construction And Plastic

Building a house is very easy with detachable blocks. The unique design of the construction materials makes it possible for anyone to build their house in a fast, efficient, and affordable manner.

Both Eco-Friendly And Economical

The cost of the construction materials used to provide housing solutions for families and communities is covered by the state, NGOs, charities, and private companies. The project team sends the construction materials to families and communities without shelter, and trains them on how to build their house.

The project not only prevents plastic pollution, but also decreases water and energy consumption, and consequently CO2 emission by transforming plastic waste before it goes into waste storage. Moreover, it provides a strong bonding experience for the communities who build their shelter together.

The houses constructed using recycled plastic blocks cost 30% less to build than their conventional counterparts. The price for a one family house starts from 4,000 dollars. The cost is measured by the weight of the recycled plastic instead of the surface area constructed.
