One In The World

  • One In The World

Energy is a resource that we need at every moment and every aspect of our lives and without it it is impossible to exist. Many types of energy are found in nature, human body and objects. We think there is no one who does not know the law of conservation of energy that we memorize like a rhyme in school age and which we are the subject of jokes. Energy cannot be created out of nothing, and existing energy cannot be destroyed. It cannot be destroyed, yes, but when our energy source is exhausted, it is as if we disappear.

We think that nobody feels helpless when our electronic devices run out of charge in traffic, meetings, camps or at any time. The phone is hung up, unfortunately they won't be able to reach me, we start thinking about what's happening in the world. There are many portable chargers nowadays, of course, and these chargers make our lives very, very easy. Portable chargers with different working principles, different colors and sizes have already taken their places in almost everyone's bags.

GOMI, a sustainable design studio based in Brighton, England, has designed a portable charger made from plastic waste. Each charger is unique, handmade and made from around 100 grams of plastic. Portable chargers produced in marble color and pattern change color according to the plastic waste present during production.

Gomi, which means waste in Japanese, transforms non-recycled plastics into accessories before entering nature, turning them into high-tech objects of the kind people love to use. This is a very rare practice for now. Although end-of-life plastics are often used to make furniture, transforming them into high-tech objects is much less common. The newly established company works with local authorities and wholesalers, who supply its raw materials, especially flexible packaging waste and plastic bags made from Pebd or Pehd, to create its product.

The whole process is very similar to a cooking recipe: The recovered plastic waste is put in a furnace and melted, then mixed to form a large ball. The hot plastic mass is then kneaded until it looks like colored marble. The mixture is poured into the loader compression molds by heating. It is then passed through a press machine that ensures the mixture fills the entire mold properly. Excess plastic mix is cut and recycled. The molds are dipped in water to cool. After the plastic solidifies, the molds are opened and recycled batteries are inserted into the charger electronics. All that's left is to mount the charger! Thus, a special portable charger with marble motifs, unique in the world, is obtained from plastic waste. These special and unique portable chargers have been put into use by bringing a different perspective to the recycling of plastic waste. It is actually that easy to protect nature and meet our needs.
