Packaging
50% of all goods in Europe are packaged in plastics. This corresponds to 17% of all packaging materials by weight. As the largest market segment, packaging accounts for 35% of the plastics market. In 2013, Germany had a production capacity of 4.6 tons and its sales reached €13.6 billion. The share of plastic packaging within the packaging market has been steadily growing in recent years and it currently constitutes 42.5% of the market in terms of production value.
The packaging market remains stable. New technologies and improved processes, which increase efficiency, render plastics more attractive. Furthermore, plastics also provide answers for such environmental challenges as the transportation of water and food in today’s urbanized world.
Construction
With a share of 24%, the construction sector is the second largest end-user of plastics. Plastics are largely preferred by today’s construction industry due to their low maintenance costs, ease of use, durability, etc.
Electrical&Electronics
With a workforce of 850,000 people and a sales volume of €179 billion, electrical and electronics is one of Germany’s largest sectors. The weight of plastics accounts for about 20% of the total weight of electronic devices. With their insulating property and flexibility, plastics are ideal for use in electronic devices. The German electrical and electronics sector accounts for six percent of all plastics usage.
Automotive
German manufacturers produced 14 million vehicles in 2014, which constituted 17% of the automotive production in world. With sales that reached €370 billion in 2014, automotive is currently the most important sector for Germany. 10% of all plastics consumption is generated by the automotive sector. About 15% of vehicle weight comes from plastic components and plastics render vehicles more environmentally friendly, lighter and safer.
Medical
Germany’s medical device market ranks first in Europe and third in the world. With a workforce of 130,000 people and a volume of €28.4 billion, it is one of the cornerstones of German economy. In 2015, the companies in the medical devices industry saw an 11% increase in international turnover and the industry’s export ratio reached a record high of 68%.
